Prayer From The Misbegotten

On this National Day of Prayer in the U.S., I was asked to hold forth a prayer in a highly public place.  I took it as a calling to make an appeal to our ageless Divine apart from the too-often-divisive lines of religion.  I hope in these few words you draw the peace of faith, the comfort that comes in surrender to the highest Love.  May love become the bottom line of our reckoning about God and the universe.  Such love is my wish for everyone who passes this way.

LORD, IT IS SO EASY TO FORGET WE ARE NOT IN CHARGE HERE.

JEREMIAH TELLS US  *YOU* KNOW THE PLAN YOU HAVE FOR US.

IT IS NOT FOR EVIL, BUT FOR GOOD.

TO GRANT US A FUTURE.  AND A HOPE.

LORD IN THESE TIMES WHEN IDENTITY POLITICS DIVIDE US, WE SEE A TORNADO DISASTER UNITE US.

HARD TIMES HAVE A WAY OF UNITING SOULS IN WHAT THEY OFTEN END UP CALLING THE BEST TIME OF THEIR LIVES.

WHY IS IT THAT HELPING SOMEONE IN DESPERATE TIMES … HAS A WAY OF ROBING OUR SOULS IN A GARMET OF PEACE?

THE KIND OF PEACE THAT COMES ONLY FROM YOU.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR SAID – “HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE.  ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT.”

LORD, ON THIS DAY OF PRAYER, MAY LOVE KEEP HATE ON THE RUN.  MAY IT RUN THE HATE RIGHT OUT OF US.

AND MAY WE LET LOVE OUT TO RUN.

HELP US SET LOVE FREE FROM OUR HEARTS.

KEEP THE DOORS OF OUR SOULS OPEN SO LOVE CAN COME AND GO, GROW STRONG.

MAY LOVE BECOME THE STOUTEST THING ABOUT US.

FOR WE ARE A HUMANITY CRYING OUT FOR LOVE.

WITHIN A FEW MILES OF MOST OF US … IN THE GREAT UNITED STATES AND FAR BEYOND … WE CAN FIND PEOPLE NO ONE EXPECTS AT HOME THIS NIGHT.

NO ONE THINKS OF THEM, WORRIES FOR THEM, REMEMBERS THEM AT ALL.

YET YOU CALL US NOT ONLY TO REMEMBER THE POOREST AMONG US.

YOU CALL US TO BECOME THEIR FAMILY.

MAY WE ANSWER THAT HIGH CALLING … WITH JOY.

THE DALI LAMA SAID THAT KINDNESS IS HIS RELIGION.

MAY KINDNESS BECOME THE ACTION OF EVERY HEART’S FAITH.

LET US IMAGINE A WORLD WHEREIN EVERYONE CHOOSES TO BE KIND TO EVERYONE ELSE.

IT WOULD PUT PEOPLE LIKE MICHAEL COGDILL IN THE GOOD NEWS BUSINESS, FINALLY, AFTER ALL.

LORD, YOUR NEWS IS A MIGHTY GOOD NEWS.

IT IS THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE.

THE SPIRIT OF LOVE.

THE KIND OF LOVE WE ALL WILL ACHE FOR … THROUGHOUT THIS WILDERNESS LIFE … UNTIL OUR VERY LAST  BREATH.

REMIND US LOVE IS A THING WE BEST GET … BY GIVING IT AWAY.

AND MAY EVERY SOUL IN MY HEARING FEEL LOVED THIS DAY.

SET US ON COURSE … FOR YOUR FUTURE … YOUR HOPE … YOUR RADICAL AND BEAUTIFUL KINDA LOVE.

IN THE NAME OF THE LOVE THAT IS CHRIST, WHO KNOWS WE ALL LIVE AS IF WE’RE  MISBEGOTTON, BUT WHO  LOVES US, IN A GREAT BIG FUN WAY, ANYWAY …

AMEN.
